The Rencontres d’Arles is one of the world’s leading festivals dedicated to contemporary photography. With more than 50 exhibitions spread across the city, the festival offers an extraordinary diversity of artistic positions—but also raises an important question: Which exhibitions should you absolutely not miss?

Photography curator Kristin Dittrich has selected the festival’s most compelling and significant exhibitions and invites you to join a unique guided tour through Arles. This is intentionally not a traditional, lecture-style museum tour. Instead, it is an engaging, interactive experience designed to deepen your understanding of contemporary photography and curatorial practice.

Together, you will explore selected exhibitions while gaining insights into:

• the curatorial concepts behind the exhibitions,
• their strengths and weaknesses,
• current developments in international photographic culture,
• the artistic approaches and ideas of the featured photographers,
• and the question of how contemporary photography is defined and evaluated in 2026.

Throughout the tour, participants will complete five practical exercises, which will be discussed collectively. The aim is to sharpen your visual literacy, strengthen your understanding of exhibition-making, and develop a more critical and informed perspective on contemporary photography.

About Kristin Dittrich

Born in Dresden in 1977, Kristin Dittrich is a curator, educator and internationally recognized expert in contemporary photography and photographic culture. She is the founder and director of the Shift School, with locations in Dresden, Vienna and Zurich—an educational institute specializing in photography, curatorial practice and exhibition dramaturgy.

Her professional career includes founding and directing the f/stop International Photography Festival Leipzig, contributing to the founding team of Paris Photo, working for documenta 13 in Kassel, and collaborating with the Rudolfinum Gallery in Prague.

After studying Photography Research and Fine Arts at the Sorbonne in Paris, she began her career as a cultural journalist, contributing to organizations including the BBC and Deutschlandfunk. She subsequently founded the f/stop Festival Leipzig with the support of François Hébel before joining the team of documenta 13.

For more than twelve years, Kristin Dittrich has worked as a mentor, lecturer and consultant for photographers, curators and cultural professionals. Through seminars, coaching programmes and educational courses, she teaches contemporary photography, exhibition-making, curatorial strategies and professional positioning within the international art world. She regularly teaches in Dresden, Vienna, Zurich, Paris and New York.

A distinctive feature of the Shift School is the Steidl Photobook Library, generously donated by renowned publisher Gerhard Steidl. This unique collection provides access to the complete photographic publishing programme of Steidl and serves as an exceptional resource for research, education and curatorial studies.

Kristin Dittrich collaborates internationally with museums, curators, authors, galleries and publishers, combining academic expertise with extensive practical experience in curating and photographic culture.

Die Rencontres d’Arles zählen zu den bedeutendsten Festivals für zeitgenössische Fotografie weltweit. Mit mehr als 50 Ausstellungen bietet das Festival eine außergewöhnliche Vielfalt – und genau darin liegt auch die Herausforderung: Welche Ausstellungen sollte man auf keinen Fall verpassen?

Fotografiekuratorin Kristin Dittrich hat für euch die spannendsten und wichtigsten Ausstellungen des Festivals ausgewählt und führt euch auf einer besonderen Tour durch Arles. Dabei handelt es sich bewusst nicht um eine klassische, ermüdende Museumsführung, sondern um ein lebendiges Format, das neue Perspektiven auf die Fotografie unserer Zeit eröffnet.

Gemeinsam analysiert ihr ausgewählte Ausstellungen und erhaltet fundierte Einblicke in:

• die kuratorischen Konzepte der Ausstellungen,
• ihre Stärken und Schwächen,
• aktuelle Entwicklungen der internationalen Fotokultur,
• Hintergründe zu Künstler und Positionen,
• sowie die Frage, wie zeitgenössische Fotografie im Jahr 2026 verstanden und bewertet wird.

Während der Führung bearbeitet ihr fünf praktische Aufgaben, die anschließend gemeinsam ausgewertet werden. So schärft ihr euren Blick für Bildsprache, Ausstellungsgestaltung und kuratorisches Denken.

Über Kristin Dittrich

Kristin Dittrich (*1977 in Dresden) ist Kuratorin, Fotografieexpertin und Spezialistin für zeitgenössische Fotokultur. Sie ist Gründerin und Direktorin der Shift School mit Standorten in Dresden, Wien und Zürich – einem Bildungsinstitut für Fotografie, Curating und Ausstellungsdramaturgie.

Zu ihren beruflichen Stationen zählen unter anderem die Gründung und künstlerische Leitung des Internationalen Fotografiefestivals f/stop Leipzig, die Mitarbeit im Gründungsteam der Paris Photo, ihre Tätigkeit für die documenta 13in Kassel sowie für die Kunsthalle Rudolfinum in Prag.

Nach ihrem Studium der Fotografieforschung und Bildenden Kunst an der Sorbonne in Paris arbeitete sie zunächst als Kulturjournalistin unter anderem für die BBC und den Deutschlandfunk.
